Profile
Since joining the University in 1978, Alan has specialised in teaching, research and outreach at the interface of planning, property development and urban design, promoting the Department's aim of developing an interdisciplinary approach to surveying and planning. Between 1997-2008, Alan directed the undergraduate programmes in the Department of Real Estate & Planning. In 2003 he received awards from the University and from the Reading Real Estate Foundation for teaching excellence.
In the 1980s Alan was involved with two research projects, concerned with aspects of development control, on behalf of the UK Department of Environment. In the mid 1990s he led research projects into the property and planning aspects of mixed-use development funded by the RICS; and a further project, concerned with the quality of urban design, funded by the DoE and RICS. In 2000 Alan led research into training for urban design, funded by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions. In 2003 he worked in association with Jones Lang LaSalle on research for the British Council of Offices into mixed-use development and investment.
Between 1978-2003, Alan was associated with Drivers Jonas, Chartered Surveyors, as an urban design consultant. His work included advising the Science Museum on development of its Queen's Gate site in Kensington and the Tate Gallery, Millbank, on improvements to its external environment. Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and a Member of the Urban Design Group. He is also a member of Reading Civic Society's Design and Environment Awards Sub-Committee.
In September 2009 Alan retired as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Real Estate & Planning but was re-appointed as a visiting lecturer specializing in teaching urban design to undergraduate real estate and postgraduate planning students
