How to Apply and Funding Opportunities

How to Apply for a Research Degree

There are no set deadlines for research degree applications. You can register in October, January or April. Students should apply sufficiently early to allow time for their applications and any grants or visas to be processed.

Successful applicants will normally have a good a Masters degree, from an internationally recognised university, and an equally strong undergraduate degree. Prospective students are also required to provide a fully worked out Research Proposal that includes:

(1) A clearly worked out research question which is justified in terms of intellectual, and where appropriate, market relevance;

(2) A research design that is intended to answer the research question posed and is feasible within a reasonable timescale - that is, the question should generate research objectives with clear outcomes and their design should incorporate research methods that can generate those outcomes within the normal time period for a PhD;

(3) Evidence of awareness of theoretical and empirical work relevant to the research question - with the theoretical component being extremely important, because a PhD must demonstrate that it advances the body of knowledge.

The proposal should take the form of a written 'plan', including consideration of all the elements above, representing your thinking on the problem - as you perceive it now. We regard this as the core component of the application; after all you are the one who is going to spend a chunk of your life doing this, so it has to have some continuing interest for you!

As well and in any case you have to make a formal application. To apply now please see use the application form.
