Leadership-and-Personal-Development-flyerLeadership and Personal Development:
A Toolbox for the 21st Century Professional

Edited by Katja Kruckeberg, Wolfgang Amann, and Mike Green

"The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them." -- Albert Einstein

Modern business leaders are just too aware of how much the world has changed in the last decades and continues to do so. It is little wonder then that even the best of us can feel overwhelmed

by the many demands we now face in our working and private lives. Summarising the knowledge and experiences of three experts in the field, and offering practical insights from specialists

around the world, this book offers a new approach to leadership and personal development by focussing on the links between these two areas.

The good old times of planning one's development in a linear, step-by-step fashion over a lifetime are over. While recognising that there are different learning styles and personality types, the authors present a more proactive, flexible and emergent approach to your development. Topics such as sustainability, complexity and creativity are considered key issues that should play a role in not only developing a positive, future society, but also in refining the current and future you. This modern approach will give you a cutting-edge advantage in our fast changing world.

Since the three authors whole heartedly agree with Einstein's maxim, this book should be considered an attempt to equip you with new levels of thinking and new skill sets to make you more successful at leading and developing yourself and others in a variety of contexts. With structured activities and proven techniques from people who have successfully applied the lessons found in this book, Leadership and Personal Development, A toolbox for the 21st century professional, you will be armed with an effective approach to development.

Billingsley, Brampton and Beyond in search of The Weston Connection - Pamela (Theophilus) Gardner

Billingsley, Brampton and Beyond in search of The Weston Connection - Pamela (Theophilus) GardnerThe story begins with the emergence, in 2005, of a porcelain tea and coffee service made some 200 years ago and a cryptic note found with the service. There are immediate indications that the potter William Billingsley may have something to do with the service, during his elusive time at Brampton-in-Torksey, Lincolnshire.

Insightful letters, wills, estate papers and the proceedings of Chancery are among the ways in which convoluted connections and interconnections of families and acquaintances come to light. Readers will be amazed by the historical figures in the story, such as the author Jane Austen and John Smeaton, engineer.

This investigative book provides additional notes and sources of information from which readers can start their own research. It also includes over 100 illustrations, the majority in full colour.

Markenbewertung in der Unternehmenspraxis -
Martin Lagarden

Markenbewertung in der Unternehmenspraxis - Martin LagardenISBN-10: 3834927279
ISBN-13: 978-3834927279
Brands are valuable assets for companies in all industries. They are a means of differentiation versus competitors and provide an anchor for recognition and decision making in customers' minds. International accounting standards or tax/transfer pricing regulations require a valuation of brands in a purchase price allocation, for example. But such valuations may also be done for brand management or other purposes. Upon finalisation of his MBA at Henley Business School/University of Reading in autumn 2010, Martin Lagarden has conducted an extensive empirical study, investigating the valuation of brands in current business practice.

Targeted respondents have been managers in finance, controlling, marketing, legal or investor relations. Feedback has been collected from more than 120 mostly large listed companies across various industry sectors in 15 European countries. The study is asking why a company is valuing its brands (or why not), who is doing the valuation, which methods are employed etc.

Respondents' opinions on brand valuation as such and on current international standardisation efforts in this field are also considered..

Project Success - Critical Factors and Behaviours - Emanuel Camilleri

Project Success – Critical Factors and Behaviours – Emanuel Camilleri book coverISBN 978-0-566-09228-2
eBook: 978-0-566-09229-9
The issue of what defines project success (or failure) is complex and often elusive, and dependent on the perceptions of different stakeholders. In this enlightening book Dr Emanuel Camilleri examines the key factors bearing on perceived success or failure. This book is not just about project management, it goes much deeper into the topic of project success by prescribing a project success framework.

In chapters dedicated to factors such as leadership, teams, communication, information and knowledge management, and risk management, the author shines a light on the key behaviours in which project managers and others engage and how those behaviours predict success or failure. Practising project managers, project board members and sponsors, struggling to manage conflicting stakeholder expectations, complexity and ambiguity, will learn which factors are vital to determining successful outcomes.

Improving Learning Transfer - book coverImproving Learning Transfer - A Guide to Getting More Out of What You Put Into Your Training - Cyril Kirwan

ISBN 978-0-566-08844-5
eBook: 978-0-566-08986-2
In today's constantly changing business environment, capable people are crucial to an organization's success, and developing their capabilities through training, learning and development initiatives is a major investment. While measuring the return on that investment is important, attempts to do so are much less valuable if they are not accompanied by a clear understanding of all of the factors than can affect the application of new skills and knowledge on the job - in other words, a clear understanding of what affects learning transfer. So, if organisations are to remain competitive, and develop the highly skilled people that will contribute to their future performance, improving learning transfer should be a priority.

Talking to the New Dragons - Melville Petrie

Talking to the New Dragons – Melville PetrieISBN 1-85252-467-7 - Management Books 2000, Kemble - List Price £14-99 - at £12-00 to Henley Alumni and available through www.ukasia.com.cn.

China has many faces and a frenetic pace of development. These make both her and her people a morass of apparent contradictions. A deep-rooted sense of being Chinese contrasts with an occasional but acute unease with the constricting effect of the depth and breadth of Chinese culture. So also did Chairman Mao's vision of marshalling correctness as political force. On one side of China's multi-faceted public image we have 'Ma's Army' of world beating runners, and her national joy at the prospect of hosting the Olympic Games in 2008 in affirmation of economic progress. On the other, we have the demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in 1989 and press coverage of Uighur Muslim separatists on open trucks. At best, all this is confusing to the Westerner if not downright garbled. Or, from the business perspective, how does one deal with a Chinese supplier going silent after positive discussions in China and splendid celebratory meals? How can we, firstly, understand the actions of the PRC Government and from a business perspective, read the motivations and aspirations of the people with whom we trade, their attitudes to money and to ownership?

'change bring it on' book coverChange, bring it on!   - Victor Lunn-Rockliffe

Victor Lunn-Rockliffe (GMC 1986), former Group Director at ECGD (the Export Credits Guarantee Department, which is the UK's official Export Credit Agency) and management consultant Keely Nugent have frequently witnessed the hurdles organisations face when implementing change within their business. Over the years Keely has also observed this same resistance in horses being prepared for international competitions. Change, bring it on! provides a unique business model.  It builds on tried and tested techniques and emotional engagement used in the training of international level competition horses and applies these theories to the world of business.  Victor, also a talented artist, worked with Keely to develop a very simple framework and story that demonstrates how to establish a winning team, how leaders and their organisations should work together to achieve success, how to plan and manage change and how to deal with the inevitable obstacles along the way.

Change, bring it on! is available from Amazon at the discounted price of £6.99 .

'A Paper on the Differences Between Scientific and Artistic Cross-Cultural Communication Understanding of Forks (Russia) - Chop Sticks (China) - Tom GroomsHands (Iran)'  - Dr Tom Grooms

Dr Tom Grooms, Henley (HBS) Reading - Brunel - Bernelli Ph.D. Published March 2010

This paper reviews literature on sources of cross-cultural communication differences within Russia, China and Iran with an emphasis upon the role of social etiquette, symbolism and interpersonal relationships of eating habits and economy. My intention in this paper is to identify dimensions in which artistic and scientific approaches of Russia, China and Iran within their cross-cultural understanding as a communication system differ.

This paper is a study which explores how social power is embedded in manners, etiquette and social graces, tone of voice and speech or language exchanged in everyday life between Russians, Chinese and Iranians. This work draws upon the sociolinguistic theory of politeness and linguistic behaviors used to demonstrate regard and consideration for others. This was hypothesized to be sensitive to the social distribution of power and influence found within the cultures.

IT_Enabled_Business_Change'IT Enabled Business Change: Successful Management'
- Dr Sharm Manwani

Dr Sharm Manwani, Henley Business School, UK

The high profile failure of major IT-related projects in both private and public sectors underlines the need for stringent change management. Sharm Manwani draws on his experiences as a CIO, programme manager and researcher to examine why organisations change the way they work and how that change is identified, managed and implemented.

The structure follows a new IT-enabled business change lifecycle which focuses on strategic alignment and delivering benefits rather than just implementing a technology solution. The target audience covers a wide range of business and IT executives, managers, professionals and expert users – all those who need to understand the issues and be more successful. An official reviewer comments,

'This book succeeds as an introductory text, most particularly in its description of the entire scope of an IT-enabled change project in a manner that seamlessly integrates organisational and technical discussions. '

Open Innovation'Open Innovation in Action'  - Andrew Gaule

Andrew Gaule (Henley Alumni 2000) is the latest publication from the H-I Network. Open Innovation is fast becoming the preferred model for new product and service development at leading organisations. It directs ideas to where they can be handled most efficiently at each stage of their research and development, reducing time-to-market, and in theory, generating more value for every party involved. At the same time, it requires organisations to rid themselves of the traditional "not invented here" attitude and welcome external knowledge in-house. It is a world ruled by licensing agreements and partnerships, in which only those with holistic, integrated strategies prevail. The book addresses the strategic alignment of innovation in leading organisations, describing the '5 Ps of Innovation' (purpose, process, people, partners and performance) and including case studies from Procter & Gamble, QinetiQ, Shell, DSM and Tate & Lyle.

Open Innovation in Action has received very good feedback. The following is just a selection:
"A timely, clearly written, and convincing book that includes useful methods and case examples. Extremely relevant and timely for the defence sector."  - Glenn Gapper, Industrial Technology Acquisition Manager, BAE System

You can gain an executive summary and order at http://www.h-i.com/research.html or on Amazon at Open Innovation in Action by Andrew Gaule.

'Knowledge Orientation in Organizations'

Dr. Edward Truch

Knowledge is becoming widely recognized as the most important asset of organizations in the current transition of developed countries towards knowledge-based economies. Intangible assets, sometimes defined as intellectual capital, account for increasing proportions of the market valuations of knowledge-based enterprises. Knowledge Orientation in Organizations provides additional evidence that knowledge management systems can be an important contributory factor to overall organizational performance and that strategic alignment does make a difference.

Much of the new literature in the knowledge management field is based on qualitative studies which postulate numerous and sometimes contradictory models describing this fast evolving area. This study adds to the body of knowledge in this area with a quantitative approach that both tests existing models and provides new insights into knowledge management strategies and how these relate to organizations' strategic orientations.

Detailed presentation (PDF-36 KB)

The book was published last year by Ashgate Publishing Ltd., Gower House, Croft Road, Aldershot, Hampshire, GU11 3HR - ISBN number is 0-7546-3812-X. If you would like to contact Dr. Truch, please email his PA on kate.fellows@knowledge-partners.com

This will not only allow to cover a broader spectrum (Mexico, Russia, SE Asia, Argentina, Japan, NAFTA, Euro zone etc) but also provide alternate and diverse view-points. In that this may also be a good example of Henley's unique strengths - (i.) a global foot-print, and (ii.) academic rigour with a bias towards applications in the real world - he is hoping to enlist the help of staff and alumni to contribute.

'How Logistics With Appropriate MIS Tools Could Contribute By 1% In A Company's Profits'

Alexander Paraskevas

It is well known that growth opportunities into the Greek and worldwide markets are limited. This is not connected with consumers' needs, but is due mainly to intensive competition and the nailing of retail prices.

Moreover, the slow rates of increasing turnover and profitability add to the impact. Faced with these facts, companies cannot be passive. Opportunities are always there and as companies direct their efforts towards 'fat fighting', these prospects will multiply. 'Fat' is considered any obvious or hidden cost in the company; it can be created through existing procedures and could therefore be reduced or eliminated without affecting a company's objectives (such as production, warehousing, sales, distribution). This article's objective is to try to answer the title's question, through the basic functions of logistics procedures. Feedback welcome.
