The author of Technological Innovation and Multinational Corporations (Basil Blackwell, 1989), which book helped to launch a new literature on multinational companies and technology creation, beyond merely international technology transfer, and which alone has a cumulative social science journal citation count of well over 100. Altogether, in a career of less than 20 years so far, John Cantwell has published ten books, over 40 articles in refereed academic journals, and over 50 chapters in edited collections. He has especially worked on international aspects of technological change, and directed an Economic and Social Research Council funded project into the historical structure of innovative activity in the UK, Europe and the USA since 1890. He is also known for his writings on the theory and statistics of international direct investment.

Affiliations:

Professor Cantwell was the coordinator of a network of economists from six European countries under the EC Stimulation Plan for Economic Science, and has since been a partner in seven other European research projects under subsequent EC-funded programmes. He is a former President of the European International Business Academy (EIBA). In 2001 he was elected as one of four EIBA Founding Fellows. He is also a member of the Board of Management of the International J.A. Schumpeter Society, and a Research Associate of the Hamburg Institute of International Economics (HWWA). He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and having been a recent Associate Editor he remains on the editorial review board of the Journal of International Business Studies. He is also a member of the editorial board of Management International Review, the Journal of Management and Governance and the Journal of International Management, and has guest edited special issues of the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Research Policy and the International Journal of the Economics of Business.
