Senior Appointments

(Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers, Research Professors
and Grade 9 posts)

Once a post has been approved the School will send the Senior Appointment Recruitment Administrator (s.e.lodge@reading.ac.uk) a draft advert, job description and person specification. Indicate which newspapers (if any), specialist journals you would like the advert to appear and give details of the external assessors.

Placing of advert

HR will arrange a meeting to be set up with the Director of Human Resources and the Dean to discuss advert, job description, person specification, further particulars and the Committee of Selection (this can sometimes take a couple of weeks depending on diary commitments)

HR will place the advert in newspapers/specialist journals, on jobs.ac, at the jobcentre (immigration rules) and on the University jobs page (for Senior Appointments only, HR will pay for advertising, usually not more than two newspapers)

HR will confirm the Committee of Selection membership

Shortlisting/Interview availability

Once the Senior Appointment Recruitment Administrator has sent availability of dates round for shortlisting and interviews the School will need to respond as soon as possible for the particular Academic(s) who are on the panel

HR will organise the dates for the shortlisting meeting and interviews and once confirmed an email will be sent to the Committee of Selection. HR will book Committee rooms and refreshments

HR will write to the External Assessors and one will be asked to attend shortlisting. They only attend interviews if Chair of Committee requests

After the closing date

After the advert closes and about a fortnight (or later) prior to the shortlisting meeting, HR will send out the packs to the Committee of Selection and External Assessors comprising of a copy of all the application forms received, a copy of the job description, a shortlisting form and a covering memo

HR will circulate External Assessor to the Committee, when received, by email

Invite to interview

Once the shortlisting meeting has taken place, the successful candidates will be written to by HR confirming their interview times and venue. The letters state that the School/Department will set up the presentations; 'You will be required to give a presentation and the School will contact you directly with regard to this'.

Presentations

The School will need to set up the presentations (including refreshments) working alongside the set times of the interviews; HR always try to secure an afternoon for interviewing in the Chair's diary in order that the presentations can be held during the morning.

References

HR will request references and forward to the Committee by email when received

Interview

HR will set up the Committee Room with the nameplates and refreshments on the interview day

HR will take photocopies of candidates passports and qualification certificates and will betaken up to the waiting area for their interviews. If the interviews are being held outside of Whiteknights House, the School will need to meet and greet the successful shortlisted candidates and take copies of their passports and qualification certificates. Please collate and ensure that the HR Partner who is attending the interview receive all copies.

Panel membership

  • Chair of the Committee: The Vice Chancellor or his nominee
  • Dean of the Faculty in which the relevant School is included
  • The Head of the relevant School
  • Two Professors elected by the Board of the Faculty in which the appointment occurs
  • One additional member from among the Senior Academic staff (Professors, Readers, Senior Lecturers and Lecturers) in the School where the vacancy occurs

   and

  • the Director of HR or his nominee who is Secretary to the Committee

Post interview

HR will draw up an offer letter and contract which will be sent to the successful candidate

HR will send email confirmation to the Committee of Selection and External Assessors upon receipt of the acceptance.
