Impact assessment

An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) is systematic and thorough analysis of a proposed or existing policy, practice or procedure (policy), which establishes and records whether the policy affects different groups of people in different ways. The EIA involves gathering and reviewing evidence to help identify the effect of the policy and then taking action to mitigate any adverse equality impact identified and taking advantage of opportunities to promote equality.
To facilitate and promote EIA activity, the University has purchased software from Marshall ACM and has customised an e-learning programme for staff. There is an e-learning module which provides training and also a practical toolkit to use to carry out and record EIAs.
The e-learning module 'Equality Impact Assessment Training' introduces the concept of equality impact assessment and will help you understand:
- What equality impact assessment is
- Why equality impact assessment is important
- What the law says about equality impact assessment
- The key stages of the equality impact assessment process.
To gain access to the training module, please contact the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Office who will provide you with registration details and then assist you with gaining access to the EIA Toolkit.
The University's EIA activity is ongoing and staff will be contacted as needed to carry out this important process. Please feel free to contact the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Office if you require any additional guidance or training.
Consultation and feedback is essential to the EIA process and we welcome participation from staff and students from different backgrounds who have experience of what issues may face people of different equality groups. If you would like to be involved in providing consultation and feedback on the EIAs being carried out at the University, please contact the Equal Opportunities and Diversity Office.
