Absence and leave
Annual leave, public holiday leave and closure day leave
All employees of the University have an entitlement to paid Annual leave, public holiday leave and closure day leave. The University encourages employees to take this leave in order to have appropriate breaks from work.
Planned leave
There may be other situations when circumstances outside work mean that an employee will request Planned leave from work. Examples of some such situation that occur often within the University are:
- Study leave, revision or exams
- Jury service
- Voluntary work and/or public duties
- Medical or other personal appointments
Family leave
In order to improve the work-life balance of staff, the University has a number of family-friendly policies that aim to make working as easy as possible for those with, or about to have, family responsibilities. Situations when Family leave may occur include:
- The birth of the adoption of a child
- Spending time with a dependent child, or making arranagements for their welfare.
Unplanned leave
The University recognises that not all absence from work can be planned in advance, and there will inevitably be some situations where employees are unexpectedly unable to attend work and have a period of unplanned absence. Some situations when Unplanned leave may occur include:
- A close relative or friend dies, is taken seriously ill or is seriously injured
- Emergency situations requiring you to care for a dependant or make arrangements for their care
- Emergency situations at home, such as fire, burglary, etc.
Sickness absence
While the University wishes to create a healthy working environment for staff, we recognise that staff will on occasion be absent from work on the grounds of ill health and it is vital that the University has arrangements for the recording, monitoring and management of Sickness absence.
